Folly of Hasty Desire
TEXT: PSALM 106:13-33
Memory verse: “They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert” (Psalm 106:13,14).

In our jet age, the insatiable nature of our desire is astonishing. Scarcely does a day pass without this tendency being replicated time and again in every facet of human endeavour. And if God does not satisfy our desires immediately, we at once become impatient and slip easily into despair.
The children of Israel failed to wait for God’s plan of deliverance at His own time and in His own way. They were too much in a hurry to receive God’s mercies and therefore acted ungratefully. This was the undoing of the people. They did not cast all their care upon the Lord nor did they wait patiently until He was pleased to answer their request. They rushed forward with reckless precipitation as if they could dictate to God about what He ought to do.
A desire, even of lawful things when it is inordinate and violent, becomes sinful and also miserable. The haste to have our desires met is such that scarcely allows God to have His way in our lives. Yet, He will.
Those who will not wait for God’s counsel and the fullness of time for His promises concerning them, render themselves disasters waiting in the wings. And we are of all men most miserable should God grant our request but send leanness to the soul. That God gives a man his desire is no proof that he is the object of divine favour. It all depends on what God’s will is. “He that believeth shall not make haste”. Patience might be most trying but its outcome is always sweet. Ultimately, it is only those who have cultivated the habit of patiently waiting upon the Lord who are assured of His renewal and blessings in time and eternity.
Thought for the day: He that waits on the Lord, makes no haste.
