The Lord Is My Portion
Text: Deuteronomy 18:1-8
Key verse: “The Priests, the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance. Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren. The Lord is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them” (Deuteronomy 18:1,2).
The Priests are not to entangle themselves with the affairs of this life and not to make any enrichment of themselves with the wealth it offers. But out of His love and consideration, God has taken care of their comforts and convenience of life. The people who benefit from their service must make the provision for their support. Whatever was the Lord’s portion in the offering of the people become theirs: the tithe, first-fruits and the oblations at the altar.
God made provision for those who, out of their zeal for God, who would dedicate their time for His service more than their normal turn of service. They were welcome in the service of the Lord and to be provided for in line with the provision for the other priests.
Jesus Christ, by virtue of His ministry, death and resurrection has become the High Priest of the New Covenant. Every Christian has come into the family of Jesus and, therefore, into His priestly line.
“For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me” (Hebrews 2:11-13). As Priests in the household of faith, the challenge God brings to us today is to live a holy lifestyle that befits our calling to be priests of God.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God has no sons who are not servants.
