It is commonly said that an empty barrel makes the loudest noise. The scripture says, “A fool also is full of words… and that “… the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness” (Ecclesiastes 10:14a; Proverbs 15:2b). People that talk too much, have nothing good to offer. Avoid them. Those in this category are usually boastful of every little achievement they make. They are proud of what God has graciously given to them such as talents, gifts and/or knowledge. The bible refers to them as fools
The wise is quite different in character and conduct. They are gentle and quiet. Their words are hardly heard and they do not make noise about their achievements. They give glory to God rather than boasting of their progress. Whenever it becomes necessary for them to talk or make contributions, their words are few but very relevant. That is the reason why the Bible says, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shuteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding” (Proverbs 17:28). The words of the wise are always few but usually full of wisdom.
Today's text explicitly brings to light the contrast between the wise and fools. Every one naturally chooses either of the two lifestyles. You also belong to one of the two sides by the way you live and pursue your life goals. What you say speaks volumes about you too. Those you keep as friends, to a great extent, also show the kind of person you are. It pays however to belong to the camp of the wise because a company of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). Choose to associate with wise people today and achieve your life goals through wisdom.
Challenge: Wise words, though few, are health to the soul.
Prayer: Help me oh God to speak few words and be wise.
