Seek to Please Him

TEXT: Leviticus 26:27–39

“And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;  Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. (Leviticus 26:27,28).

Every one usually loves to have the support and approval of the powers that be. They seek to do all they can to secure and keep the favour of such. To do this, they diligently seek to know what such possessor of power approves and what he disapproves. When this is known, all effort is geared towards doing what is approved. It is always a dreadful thing to get into the disfavour of a great and powerful monarch.

There cannot be a king or monarch that is as great and powerful as the Almighty God and for all those who really know, His favour is one that every one should really seek to have. God Himself delights to have all mankind in His favour. This is why He has carefully spelt out the terms for man’s relation with Him in His word.

In our passage for meditation today, God clearly declares what He will do to the children of Israel and indeed every one, if they should spite His mercy and ignore His rebukes. In the earlier part of the chapter, He had revealed His promise of blessings, abundance and protection for the children of Israel if they would keep His Word. He warned that if they commit sin, He would rebuke and chastise them.

The Christian, as long as he walks in obedience to God and His word, has God with him and for him. But once the Christian turns in rebellion against God to pursue sinful pleasure and personal will, the loving Father will turn against him, and he will become open and vulnerable to all evils and calamities. And what a terrible thing this will be!

There is nothing as reassuring as knowing that one has God in his favour. Before you step out today, do you have this blessed assurance that Jesus is yours? Settle whatever God may be having against you, then you can go out with the confidence that God is for you and not against you.

Thought for today: There is nothing as fearful as falling out of God’s favour.
